Child and Family Development Services

Head Start Program

Head Start and Early Head Start are comprehensive child and family development programs. Both programs are designed to develop the basic educational skills necessary to succeed in school and the social skills to participate and subsequently contribute to the welfare of the community.

As a national program, Head Start began in 1965 and CEDA initiated the first Head Start program in suburban Cook County just two years later. CEDA Head Start currently serves 2,877 pre-school children and their families through thirty Head Start centers in suburban Cook County.

Half-Day School Year - Parents may enroll their child in either morning or afternoon classes during the traditional school year. Comprehensive services which include health, nutrition, child development, mental health, social services, and services to children with disabilities.

Early Head Start - EHS helps new parents set health, education and self-sufficiency goals for themselves and their families. EHS provides full day care for infants and toddlers age 0-3. Services are also available in a home-based setting to pregnant women and their families.

Before/After School Programs - This program provides educational activities beyond the traditional school day for school age children. The parents work or school schedule must support the hours the child is in the after school program. It also requires an income-based co-payment.

Summer Food Service Program

The summer of 2012 will mark 23 years of CEDA sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program for low income children aged 18 years and younger.

CEDA serves approximately 68,000-90,000 nutritious meals in the Suburban Cook County each summer. The meals include breakfast, lunch and snacks from 18 -23 different locations.

Meals are either prepared fresh daily at the CEDA central kitchen by the CEDA Head Start skilled food service workers or meals can be catered for sites with limited kitchen space.

Each feeding location’s meal service is planned consistent with the ethic and cultural background of the children. Daily meals include fresh salads and fruits.  Children with special food restrictions receive alternative food substitutes.

Many of our feeding locations offered other services besides nutritious meals for the children including but not limited to; Summer Educational classes, Religious Bible classes, Park District recreational and outdoor physical educational classes.

This program also provides job employment opportunities to unemployed Head Start staff and unemployed youth workers.  We employ dietetic interns as field monitors, to supervise meal service preparation and service at the central kitchen and feeding locations.  Keeping children healthy through feeding nutritious and healthy meals is our primary goal for the program.
