Computer Lab Opens in Robbins
Comcast, a partner of the Community and Economic Development
Association of Cook County (CEDA), donated $75,000 to help CEDA Southeast
fund its expansion of a Community Computer Center at 3518 West 139th
Street in Robbins, IL.
“It’s very important to Comcast to give back to the communities in which we live and work,” said Sandy Weicher, Comcast South Area Vice President. “We focus on organizations that help empower residents and this grant to CEDA aligns with our goals to help improve their quality of life.”
“We are so grateful to Comcast and CEDA for establishing a Community Computer Center in Robbins,” said Mayor Irene Brodie. “21 st Century technology will enable our citizens to upgrade their computer and job skills.”
The relationship between CEDA and Comcast developed this year when CEDA applied for the Comcast Foundation’s prestigious President’s Grant. “With this Comcast Foundation grant, CEDA’s plan is to give our constituency the advanced computer skills they need,” said CEDA President & CEO Robert Wharton. “There has been a digital revolution, and some parts of our society have still not caught up, but we are creating a model in Robbins, IL that we hope can be duplicated in other communities.”
This grant from the Comcast Foundation is in recognition of Comcast’s commitment to the communities where its customers and employees live and work. Since its founding in 1999, the Comcast Foundation has distributed over $30 million in support of programs implemented locally in Comcast communities.

National Weatherization Day
As the cold weather approaches, most families across the country are turning up their thermostats to combat dropping temperatures. For low‐income families, however, cranking up the heat is not always an option. These families pay 16% or more of their annual incomes for energy compared with only 5% for other non low‐income families. Unable to pay gaping balances or hefty reconnection fees, some families are considering how they will survive this winter without heat.
Each year, October is designated as Energy Awareness Month. The Department of Energy uses the onset of winter to promote energy conservation, renewable energy, and new technology use in the energy industry. With the high costs of fuel oil still here, the rising prices in natural gas, and the ever fluctuating electric process occurring with marketing restructuring, celebrating a successful conservation program like the WAP is extremely important to everyone
TEAM
H.E.A.T.
Over the past three years, Team H.E.A.T. (Home Energy Assistance Together) project has helped more than 380 families prepare for winter. Last year more than 120 volunteers weatherized the homes of low-income customers.
The project involves installing weather stripping, putting plastic over windows and caulking around windows and doors. Volunteers are placed on a team and given a demonstration the day of the event. Each team weatherproofs about four homes the day of the event. Team HEAT will serve as a demonstration for residents on how to weatherproof the entire home. They also leave behind additional weatherproofing materials, information on energy conservation, and a list of simple ways to hold down energy cost.
